HP Keyboart Parts

I have HP Keyboard parts!

These are items you cannot purchase separately from HP. Believe me, I tried. I had to buy the WHOLE KEYBOARD to repair one key. I dropped a small paperback book on the keyboard and the spring-action pieces under the ‘T’ key cracked, resulting in the ‘T’ key sitting crooked, looking awkward, and not working very well.

Are keys easy to replace?

How easy is it to replace the key or the action? Well, You’ll have to decide that for yourself. Once I figured it out, I thought it was very easy. The hard part was figuring it out—which I’ve already done for you!

HP Keyboard - ‘T’ key removed, ‘R’ key pried up

In the photo above, you can see the ‘T’ key removed and the ‘R’ key pried up. I did this so I could see how it was supposed to look. I took a picture because my memory isn’t very good any more. At this point, I was still hoping to buy just the replacements for the broken pieces from HP! Ha, ha, ha, ha!... or Baaaaaaaaaaahahahahahaha!

On the ‘T’ key position, that is, where the ‘T’ key should be, you can see two metal tabs on the right You can see a single center tab on the left and you can also see the corresponding center tab on the ‘R’ key with the spring action in place.

The spring action consists of what I’ll call a narrow rectangle and a wide rectangle.

As you can see, the narrow piece of the spring action fits within the wider piece. There is a rail on the narrow piece that fits under the center tab on the left. The larger piece of the spring action has two pins that go under the two tabs on the right. Notice that the ‘R’ key face in the photo is currently attached to the narrower spring action piece.

HP Keyboard - ‘T’ key HP Keyboard - back side of ‘T’ key

In the above photo, you can see the ‘T’ key face, and to the right is the back side of the ‘T’ key face. Notice the clips on the right and left circled in red. Remeber, it's flipped, so right and left are reversed. These clips fasten into the action at the red-circled positions in the photo below. Also you can see how the narrow action piece fits inside the wider piece. The narrow piece has two tiny pins at the center that fit into notches on the bottom side of the wider piece.

You can also see in the photo below how the narrower piece of the spring action fits into the single center tab on the left and how the wider spring action piece fits under the two metal tabs on the right. The pins on the wide piece extend lower than the plane of the wide rectangle. This helps them fit under the metal tabs and still be able to allow the piece to lie flat.

HP Keyboard - ‘T’ key position with spring action in place

I discovered that it is easier to first lay the spring action pieces in place, each under its respective metal tabs on the right and left.

First put the narrow piece under the metal tab on the left, then fit the wide piece under the metal tabs on the right. Line them up and they’ll fit together like a little puzzle. Now you should be able to gently snap the key face into place on top of the action. That’s it! You’re done!
